Uber has announced a significant collaboration with Baidu, the Chinese technology powerhouse, to enhance its autonomous vehicle offerings. This strategic partnership, unveiled on Tuesday, aims to roll out thousands of Baidu's Apollo Go self-driving cars on the Uber platform across various international markets, excluding the United States and mainland China. The deployment of these autonomous vehicles is set to commence later this year in regions such as Asia and the Middle East. This partnership marks another chapter in Uber's ongoing efforts to bolster its ride-hailing business amidst the growing popularity of robotaxis. Over the past few months, Uber has actively engaged in several similar collaborations, integrating autonomous vehicles from notable companies like Waymo, Volkswagen, May Mobility, and Pony AI into its service. In some instances, Uber has even taken equity stakes in these companies to solidify its position in the rapidly evolving market. For example, earlier this year, Uber enhanced its alliance with WeRide, a Chinese autonomous driving firm, which included a substantial investment of $100 million. Furthermore, reports suggest that Uber is evaluating a potential financial support role for its founder, Travis Kalanick, in a takeover bid for Pony AI. Despite the swift pace of these partnerships, the integration of Baidu's vehicles into the Uber app will initially be limited. Riders will not be able to specifically request a Baidu autonomous vehicle at the outset. Instead, they might receive an option to have their journey completed by a fully autonomous Apollo Go vehicle, mirroring the operational model of some of Uber's existing partnerships.
