Uber is the latest to be won over by Amazon’s AI chips

In a significant move, Uber has announced an expansion of its contract with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to enhance its ride-sharing operations using Amazon's advanced AI chips. This strategic decision will see Uber increasing its reliance on AWS's Graviton processors, which are low-power, ARM-based server CPUs, and initiating trials with Trainium3, a new AI chip positioned as a competitor to Nvidia. This partnership highlights Amazon’s competitive stance against cloud service rivals such as Google and Oracle rather than posing a direct challenge to Nvidia. Historically, Uber managed its own data centers but entered into substantial cloud computing agreements with Oracle and Google in 2023, aiming to transition most of its IT framework away from in-house data centers. In a blog post from December, Uber reaffirmed its commitment to this cloud migration, stating, "In February 2023, Uber began transitioning from on-premise data centers to the cloud using OCI and Google Cloud Platform, navigating the dual challenge of shifting extensive workloads and integrating Arm-powered compute instances into a primarily x86 environment." The post also acknowledged the utilization of ARM chips from Ampere in Oracle's cloud services. The story of Ampere is particularly intriguing. Founded by Renee James, a former Intel executive, the company emerged after she was overlooked for a CEO position at Intel. With connections in private equity and Oracle, she successfully secured funding to launch Ampere, which Oracle backed with a significant investment. In December, Ampere was acquired by Softbank, leading Oracle to divest its shares for a considerable profit. Larry Ellison, Oracle's co-founder, indicated that the decision to sell was based on the belief that in-house chip design was no longer a competitive edge, prompting the company to pursue substantial agreements with Nvidia instead. Now, as AWS secures a larger contract with Uber—one of Oracle's key clients—Amazon is positioning itself alongside other tech giants like Anthropic, OpenAI, and Apple, all of whom are increasing their engagement with AWS due to its innovative AI chip offerings. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy noted in December that Trainium has already become a multibillion-dollar enterprise, underscoring the growing significance of these technologies in the cloud computing sector.
