Uber will bring its premium robotaxi service to Houston in 2027

Uber is gearing up to introduce a premium robotaxi service in Houston by mid-2027, marking the second U.S. city to benefit from its collaboration with electric vehicle manufacturer Lucid and autonomous vehicle innovator Nuro. This announcement comes on the heels of significant developments in the San Francisco Bay Area, where the partnership plans to launch their robotaxi service later this year. The focus for Uber is on San Francisco and Houston, both of which will see competition from Waymo, the Alphabet-owned company that currently operates commercial robotaxi services in these urban areas. Nuro has been actively testing Lucid Gravity SUVs equipped with its self-driving technology in San Francisco, achieving notable advancements, including enabling Uber employees to hail the Lucid robotaxis. However, these vehicles are not yet fully autonomous, even after Nuro secured a permit from the California Department of Motor Vehicles last month to operate without a safety driver. In Houston, Uber and Nuro's fleet of 100 autonomous vehicles is currently being tested on public roads, with safety operators present. Nuro is also employing closed courses and simulation methods to fine-tune the self-driving system before making the robotaxis publicly available. The testing fleet is anticipated to grow soon, coinciding with Lucid's initiation of manufacturing the first production models of the robotaxis at its facility in Arizona. The Lucid Gravity robotaxi, which was unveiled in January, comes equipped with advanced technology including high-resolution cameras, solid-state lidar sensors, and radar systems that enhance the vehicle's ability to navigate and understand its environment. Uber aims to enhance the passenger experience within these vehicles, focusing on how riders will interact with the robotaxi. In preparation for the Houston launch, Uber is expanding its presence in the city, establishing a 50,000-square-foot operations hub complete with a dedicated charging station. This robotaxi initiative not only bolsters Nuro, which has shifted its strategy from building delivery robots to licensing its self-driving technology, but it also aids Lucid, which has faced challenges in scaling sales amid a competitive EV market dominated by Tesla. Uber has invested approximately $500 million in both Nuro and Lucid, including a commitment to purchase at least 35,000 robotaxi-ready vehicles from Lucid, further solidifying its stake in the autonomous vehicle landscape.
