In an ambitious move to redefine urban transportation, Uber has announced plans to integrate helicopter rides into its app, set to launch in 2026. This initiative comes through an expanded partnership with Joby Aviation, a pioneering electric air taxi manufacturer. The announcement follows Joby's recent acquisition of Blade, a well-known helicopter and air transit company, for $125 million, which was finalized in August. Notably, this deal did not include Blade's medical organ transplant division. Last year, Blade successfully chartered over 50,000 passengers from 12 urban terminals, showcasing the growing demand for aerial transportation. JoeBen Bevirt, the founder and CEO of Joby, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, "Integrating Blade into the Uber app is the natural next step in our global partnership and will lay the groundwork for our quiet, zero-emissions aircraft in the future." Uber has long envisioned incorporating air travel into its services, beginning its relationship with Joby back in 2019. In a strategic move in 2020, Uber sold its Elevate flying taxi division to Joby, further solidifying their alliance. Andrew Macdonald, Uber's president and chief operating officer, emphasized that this partnership will lead customers into a "next generation of travel," reinforcing the company's commitment to air transportation. As the launch date approaches, Uber has promised to share further details on how users can book these helicopter rides. Joby has been in a competitive race to bring air taxi services to market, with advocates claiming the technology could significantly reduce traffic congestion and lower emissions. However, both Uber and Joby are still navigating the complexities of regulatory approvals from the Federal Aviation Administration.
