Uber will add Blade’s helicopters to its platform as early as 2026

Starting in 2026, Uber users in New York City and Southern Europe could soon elevate their travel experience with the addition of helicopters to the Uber app. This exciting development comes from electric air taxi innovator Joby Aviation, which announced that Blade Air Mobility helicopters will be available on the Uber platform as early as next year. While specific launch locations for these helicopters haven't been disclosed, Joby indicated to TechCrunch that they will likely operate on the busiest routes, particularly those connecting to major airports. This announcement follows Joby's recent acquisition of Blade’s passenger service for up to $125 million, although Blade's medical division, which specializes in transporting live organs, operates independently. This partnership is seen as a significant step towards the eventual introduction of Joby’s air taxis within the Uber ride-hailing network, although that timeline remains further out. Joby plans to kick off its first commercial service in Dubai in 2026, with additional markets, including the U.S., expected to follow. The collaboration between these companies is not new; Blade was recently acquired by Joby, and its helicopters have previously been featured on Uber’s platform, albeit in limited promotional contexts. Joby has a history of collaboration with Uber, having acquired the company's Elevate air taxi division in 2020, which significantly advanced Joby's ambitions in developing electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles. After going public through a merger with a special purpose acquisition company in 2021, Joby has secured significant funding, with major investments from corporations like Toyota. Currently, Uber holds approximately 2.5% of Joby's shares. While Joby appears to be thriving, some of its competitors are struggling; companies such as Germany's Volocopter and Lilium have ceased operations, and Hyundai-owned Supernal recently paused its aircraft program amidst challenges.
