TechCrunch Mobility: Uber makes a bet on premium robotaxis

In a bold move to secure its position in the autonomous vehicle sector, Uber has recently announced significant investments in partnerships with electric vehicle manufacturer Lucid and self-driving technology startup Nuro. This strategic alliance marks a pivotal moment for the ride-hailing giant as it seeks to expand its footprint in the burgeoning robotaxi market. Uber disclosed a staggering $300 million investment in Lucid, a publicly traded company that had to announce the financial commitment. However, the exact amount invested in Nuro remains undisclosed, though sources indicate it exceeds the investment in Lucid, potentially reaching around $400 million. The autonomous vehicle landscape is shifting rapidly, especially following Waymo's decision to close its self-driving truck division, which has led to the emergence of new startups. One such venture, Bedrock Robotics, founded by former Waymo head Boris Sofman, has successfully raised $80 million to develop technology for heavy construction equipment. In another development, the Brooklyn-based startup Amogy has secured $23 million in funding, bringing its total to $80 million, aimed at innovating ammonia-to-power technology for shipping applications. Meanwhile, Geely Auto's luxury electric vehicle division, Zeekr, plans to go private through a merger, just over a year post its public debut. Gridserve, a mobile EV charging company from the UK, has raised £100 million, further fueling investment in electric vehicle infrastructure. At the same time, the San Francisco startup Pronto has acquired SafeAI, enhancing its self-driving technology for off-road vehicles. On the regulatory side, the transit software firm Via has filed for an initial public offering once again, aiming for a potential market entry in 2025. Lucid is also set to enhance its Air sedans with a significant software update that will introduce hands-free highway driving capabilities. Uber's partnership with Chinese tech giant Baidu aims to deploy thousands of autonomous vehicles in various international markets, reflecting a growing trend of collaboration in the automotive tech space. General Motors has also joined forces with Redwood Materials to advance its energy storage initiatives, while Rivian prepares to break ground on its planned Georgia factory next year. As the electric vehicle market continues to evolve, companies like Tesla are facing challenges, with a notable drop in Cybertruck sales compared to competitors like the GMC Hummer EV. Amidst these developments, Joby Aviation is ramping up its production capabilities in anticipation of launching its electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles by early next year, showcasing the competitive and rapidly changing landscape of the automotive industry.
