The US government has taken legal action against Uber Technologies, accusing the ride-hailing giant of discrimination against passengers with disabilities. A lawsuit was filed on Thursday in federal court in San Francisco by the US Department of Justice, highlighting that many Uber drivers consistently refuse service to individuals with disabilities. The complaint alleges that riders accompanied by service animals or those utilizing stowable wheelchairs are often denied rides. Additionally, the Department of Justice claims that Uber and its drivers impose unlawful fees, such as cleaning charges for service animals and cancellation fees for riders who are turned away. Furthermore, the lawsuit points out instances where drivers have insulted or belittled passengers with disabilities, as well as refusing reasonable accommodations like allowing individuals with mobility challenges to sit in the front seat. In a bid for inclusivity, it is noted that women will soon have the option to request a female driver in select US cities. The complaint emphasizes the significant economic, emotional, and physical distress that Uber's alleged discriminatory practices have inflicted on individuals with disabilities. The lawsuit seeks to prevent further violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act, enforce changes to Uber's operations, and demand monetary damages along with a civil penalty. As of now, Uber has not responded to requests for comments, and the Justice Department has yet to provide additional details.
