Uber Eats has a fix for pesky returns. You can just sit on the couch

Returning items just became a lot easier, thanks to Uber Eats. The popular delivery service has rolled out a new feature that allows customers to manage returns directly from their mobile devices. On Friday, Uber Eats announced a convenient returns option where a courier will pick up purchased items from various retailers and return them for a fee. This innovative service marks a significant milestone in the on-demand delivery sector, as customers can now send back eligible items bought through the Uber Eats app and receive immediate refunds. The program includes major retailers like Best Buy, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Petco, ensuring a wide range of products are covered. Refunds are initiated when the courier collects the returned item, which must have a minimum value of $20. For those looking to avoid the courier fee—calculated based on the driver's time and distance—there remains the option to return items independently. Originally focused on ride-hailing, Uber has seen remarkable growth in its delivery sector, reporting $4.9 billion in delivery revenue for the last quarter of fiscal 2025, reflecting a 30% year-over-year increase. The challenge of returning online purchases has increasingly frustrated both customers and retailers. A recent survey revealed that one-third of participants found the process of printing return labels and packaging items to be stressful. Furthermore, waiting for refunds emerged as the most significant pain point, affecting 43% of those surveyed. To facilitate easier returns, Amazon has also integrated return options at retailers such as Whole Foods, Staples, and Kohl's. Previously, Uber Courier, known as Uber Connect, allowed the return of prepaid and sealed packages since 2023. With this latest enhancement, unpackaged items can now be returned directly to retailers, eliminating the need for customers to visit post offices or shipping centers like UPS or FedEx.
