Uber has Atlanta’s autonomous ride-hailing and delivery market on lock

In an exciting development for food delivery in Atlanta, Uber Eats has introduced a new option for customers to receive their meals via sidewalk delivery robots, thanks to a partnership with Serve Robotics. This initiative was unveiled just two days after the launch of Uber and Waymo's commercial robotaxi service in the same city. Serve Robotics, which emerged as a separate entity from Uber in 2021, has been making strides in the autonomous vehicle sector, aiming to establish a strong foothold as one of the first players in consumer-facing autonomy. Uber has collaborated with 18 autonomous vehicle companies, positioning itself advantageously in the rapidly evolving mobility landscape. According to Uber, their network currently supports an impressive annual run rate of 1.5 million trips utilizing autonomous vehicles for both ride-hailing and delivery. Atlanta is now the fourth city where Serve has rolled out its services, following successful launches in Los Angeles, Miami, and Dallas-Fort Worth. Unlike many competitors that primarily target college campuses, Serve is concentrating on urban environments, as CEO Ali Kashani explained to TechCrunch. The challenges of navigating city sidewalks present a significant hurdle but also an opportunity for greater revenue potential. Although Serve did not disclose the exact number of robots deployed in Atlanta at the outset, the company plans to scale operations significantly, aiming to increase from about 100 robots currently in Los Angeles to 2,000 across multiple U.S. cities by the end of 2025. Uber Eats customers in metro Atlanta can expect robot deliveries covering areas from Midtown to Old Fourth Ward and Downtown Atlanta, with future expansion plans in the works. The delivery service will operate daily from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., and participating restaurants include popular spots like Rreal Tacos, Ponko Chicken, and Shake Shack.
