Uber Technologies has unveiled a monumental partnership with electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian Automotive, committing up to $1.25 billion to deploy a fleet of 50,000 robotaxis across multiple countries by 2031. This groundbreaking agreement, confirmed on Thursday, sets the stage for Uber and its fleet partners to acquire an initial batch of 10,000 autonomous R2 electric vehicles from Rivian, with the potential to order an additional 40,000 starting in 2030. This venture is part of a broader trend among companies eager to tap into the burgeoning market for autonomous vehicles and robotaxis, which analysts predict could be worth trillions. Despite previous setbacks in the robotaxi sector, Uber is optimistic about this collaboration. An immediate $300 million investment is anticipated to follow the deal's finalization, pending regulatory approval. The R2 robotaxis are slated to operate exclusively on Uber's platform in 25 cities across the U.S., Canada, and Europe, with the first services expected to launch in San Francisco and Miami by 2028. Uber's CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, expressed confidence in Rivian's integrated approach, emphasizing the importance of designing vehicles, software, and manufacturing processes cohesively. This partnership marks a significant step for Rivian, which recently secured a $5.8 billion software deal with Volkswagen. It also aligns with Uber's expanded ambitions in the autonomous market, joining forces with other notable companies such as Lucid, Zoox, Stellantis, and Nvidia. Rivian's CEO, RJ Scaringe, highlighted the company's strategic vision for robotaxis, sharing insights during their recent earnings call and at their inaugural "Autonomy and AI Day." He noted that advancements in artificial intelligence and semiconductor technology are crucial for the success of robotaxi initiatives. The company is enthusiastic about leveraging its growing data capabilities and proprietary technology to drive rapid advancements in autonomous driving in the coming years.
