The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is making significant strides in its quest to become a global hub for artificial intelligence, with the first 200 megawatts of its expansive 5-gigawatt AI campus expected to go live next year. This announcement was made by an official from G42, a cloud and AI company backed by Abu Dhabi. The UAE has invested heavily in AI initiatives, leveraging its strong ties with the United States to secure advanced technologies. Notably, during a visit by former President Donald Trump in May, the UAE sealed a multibillion-dollar agreement to develop one of the world’s largest data center hubs located in Abu Dhabi, utilizing U.S. technology. G42 has indicated that the energy powering this project will come from a combination of nuclear, solar, and natural gas sources. As G42 moves forward with the initial phase, known as Stargate UAE, they are collaborating with major tech companies including Nvidia, OpenAI, Cisco, Oracle, and Japan's SoftBank. The first phase is projected to be operational by 2026, with G42’s acting group chief global affairs officer, Talal Al Kaissi, confirming the timeline at the GITEX conference in Dubai. "We are on track for the first gigawatt, beginning with 200 megawatts set to come online next year," Al Kaissi explained. Discussions are ongoing regarding the remaining four gigawatts, with G42 in talks with various U.S. hyperscalers. However, the development of the campus is not without its hurdles. Concerns surrounding security have emerged due to the UAE's close relationship with China, which has previously raised issues in Washington about access to advanced semiconductor technology. Al Kaissi noted that he has been proactive in maintaining positive relations with U.S. officials, frequently visiting Washington to facilitate discussions. As the project unfolds, the UAE aims to position itself as a leader in the AI sector, drawing on substantial foreign investment and technological expertise.
