Twitch is overhauling its suspensions policy

Twitch has revealed a significant update to its suspension policy, moving away from a rigid all-or-nothing system. Previously, any temporary suspension resulted in a complete loss of platform access, affecting a user's ability to engage in chat, view streams, or retrieve essential account information. Under the new guidelines, Twitch is introducing two distinct types of suspensions: streaming suspensions and chatting suspensions. This targeted approach allows for penalties that are more aligned with the specific violations committed by users. For instance, if a user breaches the Community Guidelines during a live stream, they will be barred from streaming but can still watch content, chat on other channels, and manage their user dashboard. Furthermore, users can continue to access their previously uploaded clips and videos. Conversely, if a user misbehaves in chat, they will face a suspension from chatting while still being able to produce their own streams or follow other content creators. Interestingly, users with a chat suspension will still have the ability to interact in their own channel's chat, but they will be restricted from participating in conversations on other streams. Twitch emphasizes that more serious violations will lead to both types of suspensions being enacted simultaneously to mitigate potential harm to the community. The platform maintains its stance that the gravest offenses will result in indefinite suspensions, permanently removing access to Twitch, as the company firmly believes there is no tolerance for serious infractions. The duration of the new temporary suspensions remains unchanged, lasting between 24 hours to 30 days. However, users should be aware that repeated violations will lead to longer suspension periods, with the possibility of accumulating enough infractions to incur an indefinite ban. The severity of each violation is assessed based on the potential harm it could inflict, whether physical, emotional, social, or financial. Twitch has also indicated that more suspension types are in development and will be introduced in upcoming updates.
