TV Time, the widely used app for tracking television shows and engaging with fellow fans, is set to shut down operations. The company announced via in-app notifications that the service will cease on July 15, 2026. While operational costs were cited as a factor, the underlying motive appears to be a strategic pivot towards artificial intelligence. In their announcement, the company expressed gratitude to users, stating, "While we loved supporting TV Time, it was no longer sustainable to continue operating the service as a free app, and there was not enough demand for a paid app." This marks a significant loss for one of the largest online communities dedicated to television enthusiasts. The closure reflects a broader trend in the tech industry, where the rapid growth of AI has led companies to reassess their offerings. For instance, the read-it-later app Pocket also succumbed to similar pressures, shutting down despite a loyal user base, as its parent company, Mozilla, shifted focus towards AI development and enhancing Firefox. With over 26 million lifetime installs, according to Appfigures, TV Time has maintained a strong presence, recently recording nearly 29,000 new downloads in just 30 days. Under the ownership of Whip Media, the app contributed significantly to a business intelligence network in the media sector, making its data far more valuable than the app's standalone profitability. However, following Whip Media's acquisition by Blue Torch Capital in early 2025, the company's direction changed. The new owners have opted to concentrate on AI initiatives, shifting away from TV Time's original data services, including sentiment analysis and content optimization, towards more lucrative opportunities like their AI-powered tool, Helix. Despite the app's popularity, it's unclear why the company chose to discontinue rather than sell it, possibly to prevent competitors from leveraging its data. Whip Media has assured users that all personal data will be deleted after the app's closure, and users can download their information using a GDPR-compliant export tool until the app's removal from stores on July 15.
