Tumblr is facing mounting frustration from its users over a problematic automated system that is incorrectly labeling posts as 'mature.' Many users have reported that their content, which ranges from harmless cat GIFs to fan art, has been unjustly flagged, resulting in decreased visibility for their posts. This issue arises as many Tumblr users have their settings configured to automatically hide mature content, making these false alerts particularly frustrating. The situation has led to widespread speculation that AI technology is at fault, a concern that has also emerged on other social media platforms. Recently, Pinterest acknowledged an internal error that led to mass bans, while Instagram has faced its own challenges with user bans, prompting similar doubts among users. Although Pinterest denied that AI moderation was responsible for its issues, many on Tumblr believe that AI-driven moderation is behind their own problems. The flagging trouble appears to be linked to a recent update of Tumblr's Android app, where the company is testing new improvements to its mature content filtering systems. According to a Tumblr spokesperson, the company is experimenting with a new moderation layer for Content Labels and is committed to refining the process based on user feedback. In an email statement, a Tumblr representative emphasized their goal of creating a safer environment while respecting users' diverse interests. They acknowledged the ongoing issues with incorrect content classification and assured users that they are actively working to resolve them. Additionally, Tumblr plans to enhance its appeal process in the coming weeks to manage the increasing number of cases. While the exact cause of these flagging issues remains unclear, it is evident that reduced staffing has likely contributed to the problem. Following its acquisition by Automattic in 2019, Tumblr has experienced layoffs as staff have been redirected to various projects, and the migration of Tumblr’s backend to WordPress has further complicated management efforts. As the platform navigates these challenges, users remain hopeful for a timely resolution.
