On Thursday, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) announced impressive earnings for the fourth quarter, revealing a robust outlook for the future of AI chip demand. During a conference call with investors, CEO C.C. Wei expressed optimism about the semiconductor market, particularly in relation to artificial intelligence. Although he admitted the long-term trajectory of the semiconductor industry remains uncertain, Wei's confidence in AI's growth was evident. TSMC, a key player in the global electronics supply chain, manufactures chips for industry giants such as Apple, Nvidia, AMD, and Qualcomm. As the producer of the majority of the world’s advanced semiconductors, TSMC’s performance is closely watched, especially amid ongoing US-China tensions surrounding technology and trade. When TSMC reports a surge in demand and plans to increase its spending, it often indicates that companies designing AI chips are anticipating sustained growth in the sector. "In my view, AI is not just a passing trend—it is becoming an integral part of our daily lives. We refer to it as the AI megatrend, and we firmly believe in its potential," Wei stated during the earnings call. He further emphasized the unpredictability of the semiconductor industry's future, pondering whether it could remain strong for several years. However, his belief in the enduring nature of AI's growth was clear: "It seems to me that AI demand is going to be endless for many years ahead."
