TSMC posts 35% jump in revenue to new record high as AI chip demand stays strong

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has announced another remarkable quarter, showcasing a surge in revenue spurred by the robust demand for AI chips. For the first quarter, from January to March, the leading chipmaker reported a staggering revenue of 1.13 trillion new Taiwan dollars (approximately $35.6 billion), surpassing analysts' expectations of 1.12 trillion new Taiwan dollars, based on estimates compiled by LSEG. This figure represents an impressive 35% increase compared to the same period last year. In March alone, TSMC's revenue soared by 45.2% year-on-year, reaching 415.2 billion new Taiwan dollars. The company is experiencing a significant boost from the ongoing demand for advanced semiconductors from major clients like Apple and Nvidia. Despite ongoing concerns regarding supply chain disruptions linked to conflicts in the Middle East and their potential impact on demand, TSMC remains optimistic. Analyst Sravan Kundojjala from SemiAnalysis expressed confidence in TSMC's performance, predicting it will surpass its annual growth target of 30%. He noted that while markets for smartphones and PCs have faced challenges due to memory shortages, the AI segment of TSMC's operations has been a major driving force. TSMC is a pivotal player in the semiconductor industry, manufacturing chips for a wide array of applications, from consumer electronics to data centers. The company has been a significant recipient of the tens of billions invested in AI infrastructure. As one of the few companies capable of producing the most advanced chips, TSMC's position in the market remains strong. Reports indicate that TSMC has increased prices for its high-end chips, contributing to the impressive sales figures for the first quarter. Kundojjala anticipates that TSMC will achieve gross margins of around 64% for this period. The landscape of chip design is evolving, with an increasing number of companies, including tech giants like Google and AI firms like Anthropic, venturing into custom chip production. However, much of this manufacturing will depend on TSMC or its competitors, such as Samsung and Intel. While TSMC regularly publishes monthly revenue updates, it typically provides limited insights into its profitability. The company is set to release its comprehensive first-quarter earnings report on April 16. Investors are also closely monitoring upcoming earnings from ASML, a key player in the semiconductor industry known for producing essential machinery for advanced chip manufacturing.
