US may get its own glitchy version of TikTok if Trump’s deal works out

Donald Trump may be working on a deal to keep TikTok operational in the United States, fulfilling a campaign promise that aims to balance national security concerns with consumer demand. Reports indicate that a revised version of TikTok could be ready for launch in the U.S. as early as this September. However, uncertainty looms over the negotiations, with Trump himself noting, "We pretty much have a deal" while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One. The former president hinted at a potential meeting with Chinese officials soon, possibly on Monday or Tuesday, to discuss the latest proposal. Yet, when asked about the likelihood of China's cooperation, Trump expressed doubt, stating, "I’m not confident, but I think so." He believes that the arrangement could benefit both nations, but history suggests that previous attempts at negotiation have faltered, notably due to Trump's tariffs, which disrupted earlier discussions. The current status of U.S.-China relations is one of a fragile truce, but tensions remain high, particularly as Trump has reiterated plans to enforce stricter regulations on AI chip exports and has threatened tariffs on countries perceived as opposing U.S. interests, including China. As the negotiations for TikTok continue, significant questions linger regarding trade dynamics, including issues related to fentanyl trafficking and access for U.S. exporters to Chinese markets. With so much still unresolved, the path to finalizing the TikTok deal appears to be fraught with complications.
