Trump proposes steep cut to NASA budget as astronauts head for the Moon

President Donald Trump unveiled a budget plan on Friday that proposes a significant 23 percent reduction in NASA's funding. This announcement comes just two days after the agency made history by launching four astronauts on its first crewed lunar mission in over five decades. The proposed budget for the fiscal year 2027 marks the beginning of a lengthy budgetary process, requiring both chambers of Congress to draft their own appropriations bills, reconcile their differences, and ultimately deliver the finalized budget to the White House for the President's approval. Fiscal year 2027 is set to commence on October 1. Last year, a similar reduction in NASA's budget was suggested by the White House, but Congress, led by Republicans, overwhelmingly rejected that proposal and maintained NASA's funding levels close to those established during the final year of the Biden administration. As with the previous budget, significant alterations to this year's proposal are expected as Congress deliberates in the upcoming months. In the documentation outlining the budget cuts, the Trump administration characterized the reductions as a means to eliminate funding for what it deems "unnecessary and overpriced activities." Under the proposed plan, NASA would concentrate on the administration’s aim of landing humans on the Moon before the end of Trump's term and subsequently establishing a Moon base. The budget requests $18.8 billion in discretionary funding for NASA in 2027, representing a decrease of $5.6 billion from the amount enacted for 2026. These proposed cuts will place NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman in a challenging position, as he will need to publicly defend the administration's budget decisions while having recently shared an ambitious vision for the agency’s future. In a statement that accompanied the budget announcement, Isaacman emphasized that the proposal aims to "sustain American leadership in deep space exploration, bolster the nation’s industrial base, and fast-track technological innovations that benefit the American populace."
