Donald Trump is encountering major setbacks in his quest to rapidly expand AI data centers across the United States, a key element in his strategy to maintain a competitive edge over China in artificial intelligence. Following his executive orders last year prioritizing this initiative, recent developments indicate that his administration's tariffs on Chinese imports are significantly obstructing progress on these essential projects. According to a report from Bloomberg, nearly half of the anticipated data center projects in the U.S. for this year are likely to face delays or cancellations. The primary issue lies in the inability of developers to import critical components such as transformers, switchgear, and batteries, which are vital for the power infrastructure that supports data centers. Historically, these components, predominantly manufactured in China, were delivered within a 24 to 30-month timeframe before 2020. However, current lead times have ballooned to as much as five years. This delay is particularly pressing given that China is estimated to lag behind the U.S. in the AI sector by approximately five years. Trump has advocated for domestic manufacturing of these crucial devices, yet reports suggest that U.S. production capabilities are insufficient to meet the rising demand. Market analysts from Sightline Climate noted that only a third of the largest AI data centers expected to become operational by 2026 are currently under construction. Faced with these challenges, some companies are reportedly willing to absorb the costs of tariffs and take on potential national security risks in order to expedite the procurement of necessary components from China. Meanwhile, Trump appears to be overlooking these complications; in March, he failed to address the power infrastructure issues when he urged tech firms to 'build, bring, or buy' the required power for their data centers. The reality for data center constructors remains clear: without the necessary equipment to operate, the source of power becomes irrelevant.
In recent years, the AI sector has been intensely focused on identifying the most advanced models. While this pursuit re...
