Trump calls for Congress to pass Clarity Act crypto bill to honor Lindsey Graham

On Monday, former President Donald Trump made a compelling appeal for the Senate to pass the Clarity Act, a significant piece of cryptocurrency legislation, in memory of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, who recently passed away at the age of 71. Trump expressed his sentiments in a post on Truth Social, stating, "In honor of Senator Lindsey Graham, a big supporter, the U.S. Senate should pass the Clarity Act." Highlighting the geopolitical stakes, Trump warned that countries like China are eager to dominate the cryptocurrency landscape as well as artificial intelligence. He urged, "Don't let China win on either subject!" The Clarity Act represents one of the most comprehensive efforts to establish regulations for cryptocurrencies and has received backing from both the crypto sector and the White House. However, the bill has encountered hurdles within the Senate, particularly as Democrats advocate for stricter ethical regulations concerning elected officials, including Trump, who has reportedly profited significantly from digital currencies. In May, the Senate Banking Committee approved the legislation with a vote of 15-9, with two Democrats joining Republicans in supporting its advancement. Notably, Graham was not a member of the Banking Committee and did not vote on this matter. The Clarity Act has gained endorsements from major crypto entities such as Coinbase, Circle, and Ripple, all of whom believe that clearer regulations will attract more investors into the market. Conversely, banks have voiced concerns, arguing that the bill could permit cryptocurrency companies to provide interest-like payments to stablecoin holders, potentially undermining bank deposits and reducing capital available for loans. Law enforcement and several labor organizations have also expressed opposition to the bill. Graham's death may further complicate the prospects for Senate approval of the Clarity Act, as it reduces the already slim Republican majority in the Senate to 52-47.
