In a significant move, President Trump signed an executive order aimed at countering state-level artificial intelligence regulations. He emphasized that federal agencies must actively oppose these laws, citing the absence of a national AI standard due to Congress's inaction. The executive directive mandates several federal departments, including the Justice Department and Commerce Department, to undertake specific measures. Trump stated, "It is essential for my Administration to collaborate with Congress to establish a streamlined national standard, rather than allowing 50 conflicting state regulations. The framework established must prohibit state laws that contradict the directives outlined in this order." Until a comprehensive national standard is established, Trump insists on the necessity of taking action against state laws that may hinder innovation. He pointed to Colorado’s recent legislation as an example of state regulations mandating ideological bias in AI models. This order comes after congressional Republicans chose not to incorporate Trump’s proposal to block state AI laws within the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Although there remains a possibility for inclusion in other legislative efforts, efforts by Senator Ted Cruz to gain support for punitive measures against states with AI regulations have also not succeeded. Senator Ed Markey criticized the move, asserting, "After months of unsuccessful lobbying and two defeats in Congress, Big Tech is now reaping the rewards of its investments in Donald Trump. This executive order serves the interests of his wealthy supporters, jeopardizing the well-being of our children, communities, workers, and environment."
