'Just blame AI': Trump hints at using artificial intelligence as shield for controversies

In a recent address at the White House, President Donald Trump raised eyebrows by implying that artificial intelligence might be used as a convenient excuse for political controversies. His comments were made in response to a viral video that depicted what appeared to be a bag being thrown from a window of the presidential residence. Despite officials clarifying that the incident was part of routine maintenance, Trump shrugged off the explanation, stating, "That’s probably AI-generated." He went on to joke about the windows being sealed and bulletproof, noting that even First Lady Melania Trump had remarked on the lack of fresh air due to their inability to open them. However, Trump's comments took a more serious turn as he characterized AI as both a potential threat and a convenient scapegoat. "One of the problems we have with AI, it’s both good and bad. If something happens really bad, just blame AI," he stated, hinting that future scandals could easily be dismissed as mere fabrications of technology. This remark reflects a growing trend in Trump’s engagement with AI. Earlier this year, he shared a manipulated video falsely showing former President Barack Obama being arrested, and he admitted to being misled by a machine-generated montage of his life. Experts caution that as deepfake technology advances, it poses a significant risk to political stability by undermining public trust in reality. If leaders start to label inconvenient truths as AI-generated—regardless of their authenticity—it could set a troubling precedent where accountability is diminished and facts are continually challenged. For Trump, AI represents both a risk and a potential shield, as he suggests that the answer to any future controversy may simply be to "just blame AI."
