Trump signals he plans to speak to China's Xi about Nvidia's 'super duper' chips

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to address the topic of Nvidia's state-of-the-art AI chips during his highly anticipated meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday. Speaking to reporters, Trump hinted that the discussion would likely focus on Nvidia's Blackwell AI processors, which he described as the 'super duper chip.' Nvidia's reference to the 'super duper chip' appears to denote the GB200 Grace Blackwell Superchip, the company's most advanced offering in AI technology. More generally, the Blackwell architecture signifies Nvidia's latest generation of AI chips, or graphics processing units, which are essential for training and executing large language models. Trump praised Nvidia's Blackwell chips, asserting that they are approximately a decade ahead of their competitors in the realm of advanced chip technology. "That's our country. We're about 10 years ahead of anybody else in chips — in the highly sophisticated chips. I think we may be talking about that with President Xi," he stated. These remarks come as Nvidia is grappling with increasing restrictions on its access to the Chinese market. For years, export controls have limited Nvidia's ability to sell its most cutting-edge AI chips to China. However, in July, Washington eased restrictions on the chipmaker's H20 chips designed for the Chinese market. Trump later suggested he might permit a downgraded version of Nvidia's Blackwell chips to enter China. In an unexpected twist, Beijing intervened to block its companies from importing Nvidia's chips. Earlier this month, Nvidia's CEO, Jensen Huang, confirmed that the company is currently "100% out of China" and holds no market share there. Nevertheless, many analysts believe that Beijing could be leveraging Nvidia's access to its market as a bargaining chip in ongoing trade negotiations with the Trump administration.
