Trump moves to ban Anthropic from the US government

In a significant move, President Donald Trump has directed all federal agencies to immediately stop utilizing AI tools developed by Anthropic. This decision follows weeks of tension between Anthropic and key government officials regarding the military applications of artificial intelligence. Trump voiced his discontent through a post on Truth Social, criticizing Anthropic's leadership for what he termed a 'DISASTROUS MISTAKE' in their attempts to influence military operations. He announced a six-month grace period for the phased discontinuation of Anthropic's services, potentially allowing time for further discussions between the government and the AI firm. The Department of Defense has been eager to renegotiate terms established in a previous agreement with Anthropic and other tech companies. This revision aims to remove limitations on AI deployment, enabling what they describe as 'all lawful use' of technology. Anthropic, however, has raised concerns that such changes could lead to the development of lethal autonomous weapons or extensive surveillance on American citizens. While the Pentagon currently does not employ AI in these controversial ways and insists there are no plans to do so, the administration has expressed apprehension about a civilian tech company's influence over military applications of such critical technology. Notably, Anthropic became the first major AI lab to engage with the military, signing a $200 million contract with the Pentagon last year, which led to the creation of specialized models like Claude Gov that feature fewer restrictions than their standard offerings. Other companies, including Google, OpenAI, and xAI, have entered similar agreements, but Anthropic uniquely collaborates with classified systems.
