Trump Mobile still claims its phone is ‘Made in the USA.’ But it pulled that language from its site

Trump Mobile, the telecommunications provider launched by the Trump Organization, has removed the assertion that its forthcoming smartphone is 'Made in the USA' from its website. This change was noted around June 22, according to archived site snapshots. Currently, the company describes the T1 8002 phone as 'designed with American values in mind' instead. Screenshots taken earlier in June showed that the phone was previously promoted as being 'Made in the USA.' This alteration follows skepticism from industry analysts about the phone's origins, which bore similarities to a model manufactured by a Chinese company. Even with the recent revisions on the website, a Trump Mobile spokesperson maintained that 'the T1 phones are proudly being made in America,' dismissing contrary speculation as inaccurate. The press release from the Trump Organization still claims that the $499 gold-colored device will be 'proudly designed and built in the United States.' However, in a recent interview, Eric Trump hinted that full U.S. production might be a longer-term goal, stating, 'eventually all the phones can be built in the United States of America.' Ryan Reith from the International Data Corporation pointed out that terms like 'designed' and 'built' lack specificity, making it difficult to determine which parts of the manufacturing process occur in the U.S. For instance, while Apple designs its devices in California, the assembly takes place overseas with components sourced globally. Trump Mobile's website claims that the phone is 'brought to life right here in the USA.' However, Reith previously remarked that truly American-made phones are exceedingly rare. Furthermore, the specifications for the T1 8002 have also changed significantly; the screen size has shifted from 6.78 inches to 6.25 inches, a notable reduction akin to the difference between an iPhone 16 and an iPhone 16 Pro Max. Such abrupt alterations after a product announcement are unusual in the tech industry. Additionally, the website no longer provides details about the phone's memory, which is critical for app performance. Experts like Todd Weaver, CEO of Purism, and analyst Max Weinbach have suggested that Trump Mobile's T1 resembles the existing Revvl 7 Pro 5G, a device produced by the Chinese firm Wingtech and sold at around $169 on Amazon. The launch of Trump Mobile comes as former President Trump, who is not involved in daily operations, has pressed major tech companies like Apple and Samsung to shift their manufacturing back to the U.S. This initiative aims to revive domestic manufacturing jobs, though experts warn that achieving large-scale domestic smartphone production is fraught with challenges, particularly given the aggressive timelines initially proposed. Weaver emphasized that unless significant undisclosed manufacturing capabilities have been developed, fulfilling these promises would be unrealistic.
