Trump extends TikTok shut-down deadline after reaching a tentative deal to save it

In a significant move, President Donald Trump has signed an executive order extending the deadline for a potential TikTok ban in the United States by an additional three months. This decision comes as discussions continue regarding the sale of TikTok's U.S. assets to a buyer backed by American investors. The extension was crucial to prevent the app from becoming inaccessible in the U.S. after the previous deadline was set to expire. This marks the third time the Trump administration has postponed the enforcement of the ban, which first took effect on January 19, just a day before Trump assumed office. On Monday, the administration announced that an agreement had been reached between the U.S. and China, aimed at ensuring TikTok's long-term operation in the American market. While the specific terms of the deal have not been disclosed, a U.S.-backed buyer is anticipated to take over TikTok’s American operations following a scheduled phone call between President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Trump's administration has been pushing for a deal to transfer TikTok’s U.S. assets from Chinese ownership to American investors, a proposition that China had resisted for months. However, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that China ultimately agreed to the negotiations after Trump threatened to shut down TikTok in the U.S. Bessent revealed that the turning point in negotiations occurred following a direct communication with Trump, who expressed his willingness to let TikTok cease operations. He also noted that the groundwork for an American-led investor group to acquire TikTok's U.S. assets had largely been established by April, but progress stalled due to the imposition of substantial tariffs on Chinese goods. As tariffs decreased and dialogue between the two nations resumed, both Trump and Xi expressed renewed interest in resolving the TikTok situation. Key issues, including U.S. national security concerns and China's willingness to approve the deal, needed resolution. Bessent emphasized that national security would not be compromised in the negotiations. He stated that a series of agreements had been reached to avoid future actions that could threaten U.S. security interests. Both parties eventually found common ground, with the specifics of the deal and investor details expected to emerge soon. Bessent commended Trump for his leadership throughout the negotiations, asserting that the outcome would be beneficial for U.S. interests. Additionally, U.S. officials hinted that securing an agreement on TikTok was essential for arranging a highly anticipated meeting between Trump and Xi, which could occur as early as next month.
