In a surprising move, U.S. President Donald Trump is set to announce a new 90-day extension regarding the future of TikTok, according to a statement from the White House on Tuesday. This extension comes just days before the previous one, signed in April, was due to expire on June 19. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the decision, stating, "President Trump will sign an additional Executive Order this week to keep TikTok operational." She emphasized the President's commitment to ensuring the app remains available, reaffirming, "As he has said many times, President Trump does not want TikTok to go dark." The extension aims to provide the Administration additional time to finalize a deal that would ensure the safety and security of American users' data while allowing them to continue using the popular short video platform. This development follows a ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court that upheld a law to ban TikTok, prompting app stores and service providers to reconsider their support for the application in the United States. Just after assuming office, Trump had initiated an executive order to pause the ban as negotiations with ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, began to explore the potential divestiture of its U.S. operations. Previously, on April 4, he had granted a 75-day extension to keep the app running amid ongoing discussions.
