Trump taps transportation secretary Sean Duffy as acting NASA chief

In a surprising move, U.S. President Donald Trump has designated Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy as the acting Administrator of NASA. This decision comes at a time when the agency is facing significant budget cuts and potential layoffs. Trump announced the appointment through his social media platform, Truth Social, highlighting Duffy's impressive handling of transportation issues, particularly advancements in Air Traffic Control systems and infrastructure improvements. This dual appointment is unprecedented, as there has never been a situation where the head of the Department of Transportation also led NASA, even temporarily. Traditionally, those at the helm of NASA have been individuals with extensive backgrounds in science, space exploration, or public service, such as former astronauts or military personnel. Duffy, however, lacks formal experience in these fields, although his department oversees the Federal Aviation Administration, which plays a role in commercial space transportation. With Duffy managing both roles, it seems that his focus at NASA will align closely with Trump's immediate policy objectives. These goals include a proposed 25% budget cut to NASA, which could significantly impact scientific initiatives and reduce the agency's workforce by 5,000 positions. This budget reduction was outlined in the White House’s “One Big Beautiful Bill.” Duffy's appointment follows Trump's controversial withdrawal of his nomination of billionaire Jared Isaacman for the NASA Administrator position. Isaacman, who has made headlines for his space voyages aboard SpaceX missions, was dropped after Trump cited concerns over his political donations and connections to SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. This decision reportedly strained Trump's relationship with Musk, as he expressed discomfort over the idea of someone so closely tied to Musk overseeing NASA operations. Replacing Janet Petro, the former director of Kennedy Space Center, Duffy's tenure as acting NASA chief is expected to be closely scrutinized, although the duration of his appointment remains uncertain.
