In a significant shift following three of the hottest years recorded, the Trump administration is poised to officially withdraw the U.S. government's role in regulating greenhouse gas emissions. This decision, expected this week, revolves around rescinding a 17-year-old scientific conclusion by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that deemed greenhouse gases a threat to public health and welfare. The planned revocation will dismantle the legal foundation that has allowed the EPA to take action against climate change under the Clean Air Act. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin is set to join President Donald Trump at an event aimed at promoting coal usage, coinciding with the repeal of mercury and air toxic standards. This event is anticipated to precede Zeldin’s formal completion of the endangerment finding repeal, a directive that Trump assigned him on the first day of his second term. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt emphasized that Trump is enacting what she described as unprecedented deregulation to enhance American energy production and reduce costs. This decision represents a stark and aggressive shift away from climate action compared to the regulatory rollbacks seen during Trump’s initial term. Zeldin’s team has argued that the EPA did not possess the authority to establish such regulations in the first place. In response, climate advocates and Democratic-led states are pledging to contest the repeal, which not only nullifies key climate policies from President Joe Biden's administration but also complicates future efforts to control fossil fuel emissions from vehicles, power plants, and other industrial sources. Michelle Roos, executive director of the Environmental Protection Network, a coalition of former EPA officials, expressed grave concerns over the decision. "Communities nationwide will suffer the consequences of this choice—resulting in poorer air quality, increased health expenses, and heightened climate risks," she stated. Roos condemned the Trump administration for abandoning its duties and undermining years of scientific progress aimed at protecting the environment and public health.
