Environmental protection rules for rocket launches targeted by Trump administration

The Trump administration is reportedly moving towards reducing environmental protection regulations that govern commercial rocket launches, a shift that could significantly impact public safety and ecological preservation. A draft executive order, which has been reviewed by ProPublica, instructs Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy to utilize all available powers to either eliminate or accelerate environmental assessments for rocket launch licenses. This proposed order may lead states to permit a greater number of launches and possibly increase the number of launch sites, referred to as spaceports, along their coastlines. This initiative aligns with the ongoing efforts from industry leaders, including Elon Musk's SpaceX, who have long advocated for a reduction in federal oversight. As commercial rocket launches become more frequent, critics express concern over the potential ramifications of such deregulation. Jared Margolis, a senior attorney with the Center for Biological Diversity, voiced apprehension, stating, "It would not be reasonable for them to be rescinding regulations that are there to protect the public interest, and the public, from harm. My fear is whether they will alter regulations in a way that jeopardizes public safety and endangers wildlife and habitats." The White House has remained tight-lipped regarding the draft order, with spokesperson Kush Desai emphasizing the administration's commitment to maintaining America's leadership in space while ensuring public safety and national security. Desai noted that any discussions about potential policy changes should be considered speculative unless formally announced by President Trump. Furthermore, this order would enhance Trump's influence over the primary regulatory body for the space industry by converting the head of the FAA's Office of Commercial Space Transportation into a political appointment. Recently, the previous office head, along with two other senior officials, opted for voluntary separation from their positions. The proposed order also aims to establish a new advisory role under the transportation secretary to facilitate the deregulation of the space sector.
