Trump administration undermines EPA enforcement of Clean Air Act

In a significant shift, the Trump administration has officially repealed the EPA’s 2009 finding that recognized greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, as threats to public health and welfare. This decision marks a critical juncture in the enforcement of the Clean Air Act, as the endangerment finding has historically supported the regulation of these harmful emissions. Currently, the new regulations focus on emissions from automobiles and trucks, but experts anticipate this will be the first step in a series of changes to federal air pollution policies. However, before the complete repeal of the endangerment finding can occur, the EPA is required to navigate a lengthy administrative process, reminiscent of the two-year timeline it took to establish the original finding. According to Axios, the decision made by EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin could slow the decline in greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 10%. While this figure is notable, it is insufficient to reverse the ongoing trend, especially given that affordable renewable energy sources have increasingly dominated the new electricity-generation landscape. Fred Krupp, president of the Environmental Defense Fund, voiced concerns regarding the implications of this action, stating that it could result in increased pollution, leading to higher costs and real impacts on American families. Additionally, projections indicate that unchecked climate change could elevate mortality rates in the U.S. by around 2% and potentially diminish global GDP by 17% by the year 2050, translating to an economic loss of about $38 trillion.
