Trump Admin releases Anthropic Mythos to be used by more than 100 US companies, agencies

In a significant policy shift, the Trump administration has lifted restrictions on Anthropic's advanced cybersecurity model, Mythos 5, allowing it to be utilized by more than 100 U.S. government agencies and companies. This decision comes two weeks after the ban that initially led to Anthropic withdrawing both Mythos 5 and another model, Fable 5, from circulation. Reports from Semafor and Reuters indicate that the new directive permits non-American employees at these organizations to access Mythos 5, including Anthropic’s own international staff, who were previously affected by the ban. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick communicated this change in a letter to Anthropic’s chief compute officer, Tom Brown, stating that adequate safeguards were now in place for trusted partners. However, the directive did not mention the status of Fable 5, which had been made available shortly before the ban due to purported enhanced protections. Both models were temporarily suspended after security researchers reportedly found ways to circumvent the safeguards. In response to the recent developments, Anthropic expressed appreciation for the collaboration with the U.S. government. In an update posted on X, the company stated, “Since June 12, we’ve been working closely with the US government to restore access to Claude Mythos 5 and Fable 5. Today, the government notified us that Mythos 5, our strongest cybersecurity model, can be redeployed to a set of US organizations that operate and defend critical infrastructure.” Anthropic plans to expedite the restoration of access for these organizations and is actively pursuing the reinstatement of Fable 5 for broader use.
