Truecaller, the Swedish caller identification service, has launched a groundbreaking AI voicemail feature specifically for Android users in India. This new offering, revealed on Thursday, aims to revolutionize the traditional voicemail experience by providing instantaneous transcription and integrated spam protection—all at no cost to users. Unlike conventional voicemail systems that rely on carriers, Truecaller’s service allows users to record, store, and playback messages directly within the app. A standout aspect of this new service is the local storage of voice recordings, ensuring users maintain full privacy and control over their data. The AI transcription feature converts voice messages to text within seconds, making it easier for users to read messages in settings where listening is impractical, such as during meetings or in crowded areas. The service supports 12 Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada, enhancing its accessibility and relevance. To utilize this feature, users need to have the latest version of the Truecaller app installed and enable call forwarding on their mobile number. This setup allows missed calls to be directed to Truecaller’s voicemail system. Rishit Jhunjhunwala, CEO of Truecaller, emphasized that this initiative seeks to eliminate the challenges posed by outdated voicemail systems. While the basic voicemail service is now available for free to all users in India, Premium subscribers will continue to enjoy the advanced features of the "Truecaller Assistant," which can interact with callers and provide personalized greetings. Truecaller intends to extend the voicemail service to additional international markets after its successful launch in India.
