Truecaller’s call-recording feature won’t work on iPhones from September 30

Truecaller has announced that it will discontinue its call recording feature for iOS devices, effective September 30. This decision comes just over two years after the feature was launched, as the Swedish tech company aims to concentrate on its primary services of combating spam calls. In a confirmation to TechCrunch, Truecaller’s head of iOS, Nakul Kabra, explained that the company is transitioning its focus towards enhancing its Live Caller ID and automatic spam blocking capabilities. Users who have previously saved call recordings will have the option to download them, share via email or messaging apps, or switch to iCloud for storage to ensure accessibility after the feature is retired. The call recording function was reintroduced for iOS subscribers in June 2023, following its debut on Android. The app also included new support for call transcription. However, unlike Android, where call recording operates smoothly, iOS presents significant challenges due to Apple’s restrictions against third-party apps recording calls natively. Truecaller had to implement a workaround by merging calls through a recording line, which increases both operational costs and complexity, leading to the eventual discontinuation of the feature. Truecaller has created a support page to assist users during this transition. This development follows Apple’s own introduction of native call recording and transcription features in the iOS 18.1 update, allowing users to record calls without needing a recording line, and utilizing Apple Intelligence for transcription. Originally, Truecaller aimed to attract more iPhone users with its call recording feature, as the free version of its caller ID functionality is limited. Premium subscribers enjoy additional benefits including real-time caller ID, advanced spam blocking, Siri shortcuts, and incognito mode. As of the second quarter, Truecaller has approximately 3 million subscribers globally, with iOS contributing to 44% of its premium revenue.
