TransUnion, a leading name in credit reporting, has reported a significant data breach impacting over 4.4 million customers. This alarming incident occurred on July 28 and was detailed in a recent filing with the attorney general's office in Maine. The company has linked the breach to unauthorized access through a third-party application that held personal data for its U.S. consumer support operations. While TransUnion has asserted that no credit information was compromised, they have yet to provide concrete evidence to support this claim. The specifics regarding the types of personal data that were unlawfully accessed remain unclear. David Blumberg, a spokesperson for the company, did not respond immediately when approached for comments by TechCrunch. As one of the largest credit reporting agencies in the United States, TransUnion manages the financial information of over 260 million Americans. This incident is part of a troubling trend, as several major corporations, including Google and Allianz Life, have recently experienced similar data breaches affecting customer information stored on Salesforce's cloud databases. In the aftermath of these events, Google cited an extortion group called ShinyHunters as being responsible for their breach. However, the identity of the hackers behind TransUnion's incident remains unknown, along with any potential demands they may have made to the company.
