David Berg gained invaluable insights into the waste management sector while working as a driver for Brattle Motors in Ohio. He quickly realized that, despite the availability of numerous sales prospecting tools, the industry still heavily relies on outdated methods such as pen-and-paper techniques and door-to-door sales. "The market has stuck to old-school strategies, with minimal technology for CRM or sales funnel management," Berg shared with TechCrunch. Recognizing a significant opportunity, Berg founded CommanderAI in early 2024, aiming to create a specialized customer relationship management (CRM) and sales prospecting platform tailored for waste management and related industries, including dumpster rentals and industrial recycling. As the CEO, Berg pointed out that while existing solutions like Salesforce or HubSpot could theoretically cater to this sector, their complexity and lack of industry-specific features hinder widespread adoption. CommanderAI's software is designed to accommodate the unique contracts and data needs of waste management firms. These companies often target small, independent businesses without an online presence, as well as new construction projects that are not publicly advertised. Utilizing artificial intelligence, CommanderAI extracts and segments relevant information to assist its users effectively. "Even though this data is available on the public web, organizing it into a useful format required significant effort," explained Berg. "The nuances of the waste management industry are extensive." The waste management sector is far from insignificant, generating over $100 billion in revenue in 2024, as reported by an industry trade organization. This market comprises a wide array of players, from small haulers with a few trucks to the massive Waste Management corporation, valued at $90 billion. Berg emphasized the company's approach: "We’re not here to replace your sales team or change your methods; we just want to help you sell more effectively." CommanderAI's platform caters to businesses of all sizes, from solo haulers to large enterprises, with a current focus on mid-to-large regional operators. The company has found particular success with medical and hazardous waste management providers. Recently, CommanderAI secured a $5 million seed funding round led by 11 Tribes Ventures, with contributions from Watchfire Ventures, Gaingels, and Rad Fund. Berg indicated that these funds will be used to enhance the sales team and further develop the platform, introducing features like mapping, marketing, and routing. Berg remarked on the investor landscape, noting that few have previously invested in waste management technology, indicating a need for education about the industry. "Our goal is to have 30% of the waste management sector using CommanderAI as their primary AI tool and integrating it into their technological framework when the timing is right," he stated, hinting at future expansions into related sectors.
