Why investors are going gaga over solid-state transformers

The electrical grid is facing an urgent need for modernization, particularly in the realm of transformers. While these critical components have remained largely unchanged since the days of Thomas Edison, innovative startups are now working to reinvent them. By integrating advanced power electronics, these firms are enabling grid operators to gain enhanced control over electricity distribution. Subhashish Bhattacharya, co-founder and CTO of DG Matrix, likens the new solid-state transformers to powerful devices akin to internet routers. Recently, three startups have secured impressive funding to boost their production capabilities in this sector. DG Matrix raised $60 million in a Series A round, while Heron Power attracted $140 million in Series B financing. Additionally, Amperesand raised $80 million in November to target the growing data center market. Current transformers are known for their reliability, but they are outdated and limited in functionality. Constructed mostly from copper and iron, these devices passively respond to grid changes and are designed for singular tasks. Drew Baglino, founder and CEO of Heron Power, emphasizes that traditional transformers lack monitoring and control capabilities, which can pose challenges during power surges or outages. In contrast, the new solid-state transformers can harness power from various sources including renewables and batteries, converting electricity to both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) across multiple voltage levels. This versatility enables them to replace several older devices, making them particularly appealing for data centers seeking to optimize their power systems. As the demand for electricity continues to grow, particularly from data centers and electric vehicle chargers, the need for new transformers is becoming increasingly urgent. According to the National Laboratory of the Rockies, the power flowing through transformers is expected to double by 2050, with over half of the existing units already exceeding 35 years of age. Manufactured from silicon-based materials, solid-state transformers offer a flexible and controllable solution that can be updated via software. Unlike their traditional counterparts, they are not subject to the same price volatility that affects copper and steel. Unlike conventional transformers that utilize copper windings, solid-state versions use semiconductors, such as silicon carbide or gallium nitride, for frequency conversion. Their architecture typically includes a rectifier, a voltage converter, and an inverter, allowing for bidirectional power flow—an essential feature for backup power scenarios in data centers. These transformers can also streamline operations by replacing multiple pieces of equipment, which is particularly beneficial in data centers where space is at a premium. The integration of behind-the-meter power generation becomes simpler as well, reducing the need for additional transformers. When paired with grid-scale batteries, solid-state transformers can eliminate the need for uninterruptible power supplies, further optimizing space and cost. While solid-state transformers currently carry a higher price tag compared to traditional models, their ability to consolidate functions makes them a strong contender in data centers and electric vehicle charging stations. Experts believe that once they are more widely implemented in the grid, they could significantly lower transmission and distribution costs, which are major contributors to rising utility bills. By enabling a smarter infrastructure that can adapt to real-time conditions, these transformers promise to enhance the efficiency of power distribution networks.
