Co-founder David Tuttle expressed his concerns about the current state of military logistics, stating, "The U.S. military heavily relies on Excel spreadsheets and manual processes for its logistics operations." He highlighted the stark contrast between the industry's focus on weaponry and the often-overlooked logistics sector, which requires significant modernization. Tuttle, a former field artillery officer and a veteran of the Joint Special Operations Command, along with co-founder Peter Goldsborough—who has backgrounds at Meta and the Marine Corps—established Rune Technologies to address these challenges. The urgency for modernizing military logistics has been underscored by recent conflicts, such as the situation in Ukraine, where traditional processes struggled to keep pace with the demands of contemporary warfare. Rune's flagship product, TyrOS, is designed to transform outdated manual logistics practices into a sophisticated, intelligent supply network capable of predicting future needs and optimizing resources. Recently, Rune Technologies successfully raised $24 million in Series A funding, led by Human Capital and supported by notable investors including Pax VC and a16z. The funds will be utilized to broaden the deployment of TyrOS across various branches of the U.S. military. TyrOS stands out for its robust capabilities as a mission command system, employing deep learning models to anticipate supply and demand for crucial resources such as personnel, transportation, and equipment. Tuttle explained that effective logistics management involves considering multiple factors: not only the available supplies but also the vehicles and qualified personnel needed to transport them, as well as potential threats that could impede operations. The Rune team, which consists largely of veterans, is also exploring the integration of generative AI into TyrOS to enhance real-time decision-making in complex battle environments. Another key feature of TyrOS is its edge-first architecture, which allows the system to function without constant internet connectivity, thus enabling operations in remote locations. Tuttle emphasized that this design philosophy caters to the realities faced by military personnel on the ground. With support from influential figures in the tech and defense sectors, including executives from Palantir and Anduril, Rune Technologies is poised for significant growth. The company recently joined the Palantir Startup Fellowship and integrated its systems with Palantir's Defense OSDK, aiming to bridge the gap between tactical intelligence and strategic decision-making. Tuttle's vision extends beyond immediate logistical needs; he aims to influence production decisions within the defense industrial base, seeking to connect tactical data with broader operational strategies for enhanced military effectiveness.
