Who is Tanay Kothari: The Indian-origin founder betting on a voice-first future with Wispr Flow

Tanay Kothari envisions a world where the next generation is not confined to screens. The entrepreneur, originally from Delhi, is spearheading Wispr Flow, a startup focused on making voice the primary mode of interaction with technology. As the co-founder and CEO, Kothari is at the forefront of a groundbreaking initiative aimed at establishing voice as the standard input method across various devices. Recently, Wispr Flow successfully expanded its AI-powered dictation tool to Android, completing its cross-platform rollout that includes Mac, Windows, and iOS, marking a significant milestone in the quest for a voice-first future. Kothari's impressive journey began in New Delhi at Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram, where he excelled academically as salutatorian with a remarkable 98% in science. His leadership skills emerged early as he served as Head Boy and actively participated in various student organizations, particularly in computer science and aerospace clubs. Even before attending college, Kothari had already ventured into product development, launching seven mobile and desktop applications that garnered over 30,000 downloads across 17 countries. After completing his schooling, he pursued computer science at Stanford University from 2016 to 2020, specializing in artificial intelligence and machine learning. He also contributed to academia by assisting in teaching Stanford’s deep learning course alongside AI expert Andrew Ng. Kothari's research included innovative medical AI work at Stanford’s AIMI lab, where he co-authored a significant paper on detecting pulmonary embolism in CT scans. Kothari’s entrepreneurial spirit is evident from his teenage years when he co-founded Convert.cc, a music intelligence platform that attracted 2.5 million monthly users without any marketing efforts. He also developed Proximity, a social travel app, and gained experience at Microsoft, where he led a personalization project that enhanced revenue for Microsoft News. In 2020, he launched FeatherX, a personalization platform for e-commerce that was quickly acquired by Cerebra Technologies, where he subsequently took on leadership roles in product and engineering. In 2021, Kothari and his colleague Sahaj Garg established Wispr Flow with the aim of developing what Kothari describes as “the best voice interfaces in the world.” The startup has successfully raised approximately $81 million from prominent venture capital firms, including Menlo Ventures and NEA. Wispr Flow’s innovative product not only transcribes speech but also corrects grammar, comprehends context, and adapts to unique speaking styles, enhancing productivity for users who frequently write emails and documents. The recent Android launch utilizes a floating interface rather than a traditional keyboard replacement, demonstrating the platform's adaptability. This move positions Wispr Flow to compete with existing voice tools from major players like Google and Apple. Kothari envisions his work as part of a generational transition, advocating for a future where technology prioritizes voice interaction over screen dependency.
