Reliance Jio launches JioPC: Turn your TV into a cloud-powered computer; subscription plans start at Rs 599

On August 29, Akash Ambani, chairman of Reliance Jio, introduced JioPC at the company's annual general meeting, unveiling a groundbreaking service that converts a regular Jio set-top box into a robust, cloud-driven personal computer. This innovative solution allows users to turn any television or screen into a fully functional, AI-capable system. Imagine avoiding hefty expenses on traditional laptops or desktops. With JioPC, all you need is to connect a keyboard to your Jio Set-Top Box, and your TV transforms into a computer in an instant. The heavy processing, storage management, and software updates are all managed remotely via Jio's cloud servers. This eliminates concerns about costly hardware upgrades, sluggish performance, or outdated programs. JioPC offers a scalable solution where users pay only for what they utilize, ensuring that the virtual computer adapts to their evolving requirements. Ambani described JioPC as a significant advancement, emphasizing that it is designed to provide everyone with access to computing power typically reserved for a select few. With an extensive base of over 500 million telecom subscribers and robust 5G infrastructure, JioPC aims to democratize technology access across Indian homes, educational institutions, and small enterprises. The device operates on Ubuntu (Linux), a secure and efficient open-source operating system, and comes preloaded with LibreOffice, which includes essential tools for word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations. Users who prefer Microsoft Office can also access it via their web browsers. Each JioPC subscription is equipped with a quad-core processor, 8GB of RAM, and 100GB of storage, providing ample resources for everyday tasks such as web browsing, programming, online learning, and productivity applications. As a cloud-based solution, JioPC ensures users are protected from viruses and outdated software, maintaining security and seamless updates. To utilize JioPC, users require a Jio Set-Top Box, a stable internet connection, and a USB or Bluetooth-enabled keyboard and mouse. Unlike conventional hardware sales, JioPC operates on a subscription model. Initially, access is available through invitations, with a complimentary trial for early users. Following the trial period, subscribers can choose from several flexible plans: - 1-month plan: Unlimited usage at Rs 599 - 2-month plan: Unlimited usage at Rs 999 - 6-month plan + 2 months free: Unlimited usage at Rs 2,499 - 12-month plan + 3 months free: Unlimited usage at Rs 4,599 This subscription-based approach minimizes upfront costs, making it more accessible for families, students, and professionals who may not have the means to purchase a personal computer outright. Getting started with JioPC is straightforward. Users simply need to turn on their TV and Jio Set-Top Box, navigate to the apps section to open the JioPC app, connect their keyboard and mouse, create a JioPC account, and then select 'Launch Now' to access their virtual desktop.
