In a bold move to bolster its hybrid vehicle lineup, Toyota announced on Tuesday a substantial investment of $912 million across five factories in the United States. This initiative aims to ramp up production to cater to the growing consumer demand for hybrid automobiles, a segment where Toyota has long held a leadership position. This financial commitment is part of a larger strategy, as the Japanese automaker plans to allocate up to $10 billion over the next five years to enhance its operations in the U.S. The announcement comes at a crucial time when the automotive industry, including Toyota, is adapting to challenges such as tariffs and the impending conclusion of federal tax incentives for electric vehicles. The investment will be distributed among facilities in West Virginia, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Missouri, focusing primarily on establishing new production lines for hybrid vehicle components. Notably, approximately $125 million is earmarked for the production of a hybrid-electric Toyota Corolla, marking the first assembly of this model in the U.S. The largest portion of the investment, around $453 million, will be directed toward scaling up the production of hybrid-compatible 4-cylinder engines, sixth-generation hybrid transaxles, and stators at the Buffalo plant in West Virginia.
