City dwellers are increasingly seeking cars that combine CNG efficiency with the ease of automatic transmissions, and several models are now available for less than ₹10 lakh. Leading the pack is the Tata Tiago, the most affordable option with a factory-fitted CNG AMT. With prices ranging from approximately ₹8.08 lakh to ₹9.79 lakh for the CNG AMT variants in Mumbai, this compact car boasts a 1.2-litre petrol-CNG engine paired with a 5-speed AMT gearbox. Tata Motors claims that the Tiago achieves an impressive ARAI-rated fuel efficiency of 28.06 km/kg in CNG mode. An automobile analyst noted, "The Tiago provides outstanding operational costs for urban users looking for a hassle-free automatic experience. Its fuel efficiency makes it an enticing choice for first-time buyers." Next up is the Tata Altroz, a premium hatchback that now offers a CNG-AMT variant. This model features a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and Tata’s AMT system, promising a mileage of 26.2 km/kg. The on-road price for Altroz CNG AMT models starts around ₹9.96 lakh, although some variants may exceed ₹10 lakh depending on metropolitan pricing. An industry expert remarked, "By offering CNG options across its hatchback lineup, Tata provides consumers with a range of choices while maintaining high interior quality." For those inclined towards a compact SUV, the Tata Punch offers a CNG-AMT option as well. With a starting price of approximately ₹9.74 lakh in Mumbai, the Punch is powered by a 1.2-litre engine and boasts a CNG efficiency of 26.99 km/kg. An industry consultant stated, "Urban buyers desiring an SUV-like experience with lower running costs may find the Punch CNG AMT especially attractive; it combines the convenience of an automatic transmission with economical fuel consumption." Breaking into the market is the Nissan Magnite, which can be equipped with a retrofit CNG kit for its AMT models. The on-road prices for the Magnite with this retrofit range from ₹7.83 lakh to ₹11.23 lakh in Mumbai, depending on the trim and specifications of the kit. Nissan claims that the Magnite offers a CNG AMT mileage of 24.09 km/kg. An industry consultant noted, "Retrofit kits provide flexibility for buyers favoring specific automatic trims, but factory-fitted systems typically lead in warranty and overall integration." With competitive pricing and improving efficiency ratings, the combination of CNG and automatic transmissions is becoming a viable option for urban drivers aiming to reduce running costs while enjoying the convenience of an automatic vehicle.
