The automotive landscape in 2025 has seen significant upheaval. Following a period of optimism surrounding electric vehicles (EVs), some have begun to push back against the momentum of clean energy and fuel efficiency. In response, several automakers have opted to delay or even scrap plans for new electric models, instead favoring traditional gasoline-powered vehicles. Nevertheless, the development of EV infrastructure continues to progress, and many users report increased reliability in charging networks. This year also delivered thrilling moments in motorsports, highlighted by an exhilarating Formula 1 season alongside exciting sports car and Formula E races. Among the numerous vehicles tested this year, a select few truly stood out. One notable mention is the Lotus Emira, which illustrates the complexities of brand revival. Since Geely's acquisition of the iconic British brand in 2017, expectations were high. However, the trend towards larger, heavier electric models has posed challenges for the brand’s reputation. Yet, the Emira, powered by a sturdy Toyota-sourced V6 engine, remains a beacon of traditional sports car charm, equipped with a manual gearbox that appeals to driving enthusiasts. Its modern infotainment features and engaging steering feel make it a refreshing option in a market leaning heavily towards the safe choice of the Porsche 718 Cayman. Additionally, my extended experience with a Volvo station wagon transformed my initial perceptions of it. While it may not boast impressive speed or an exhilarating engine sound, its design—meant to handle rugged Swedish terrain—proves advantageous on the uneven surfaces of American roads. The vehicle unexpectedly showcases agility in cornering, making it an unexpectedly delightful ride. As we reflect on this year, it’s clear that 2025 has been a year of both challenges and remarkable vehicles that continue to make driving an exhilarating experience.
