The book-tracking application Tome, which garnered a following among avid readers, is set to close its operations. Emerging from the vibrant BookTok community—where TikTok creators engage in discussions and reviews of literature—Tome provided a platform for users to log and evaluate their reading experiences. The app allowed users to share everything from favorite quotes and memes to curated playlists that resonated with the themes of their chosen books. Initially appealing to a burgeoning audience of Gen Z readers, particularly women who championed the 'romantasy' genre, Tome found itself amidst a competitive market crowded with similar applications. Competing platforms such as Fable, Margins, Bookly, StoryGraph, and others also aimed to attract this demographic, making it increasingly difficult for Tome to carve out a sustainable niche. In a blog post detailing the shutdown, Tome acknowledged the challenging competitive environment. Despite having built a community of around 100,000 readers, the app struggled to reach the scale necessary to cover operational costs associated with maintaining a social platform that supported multimedia content. Ultimately, the company concluded that continuing the service was not financially feasible. The shutdown is scheduled for May 29, at which point the app and its website will cease to function. Users have been informed on how to retrieve their data, including posts, images, and a record of their reading history, prior to the closure.
