Tinder evolves some features into dating ‘modes’

In an effort to boost user retention and engagement, Tinder is transforming its platform with the introduction of new 'modes' that revamp existing features alongside an updated home screen. Among these enhancements are two innovative modes: Double Date and College Mode, designed to enrich the dating experience while still offering the classic Tinder feel through a new 'For You' option on the home screen. The Double Date mode, which allows users to team up with friends and match with other pairs, was initially launched in June and is now being rolled out globally following a successful trial in select regions. Since the introduction of this feature, Tinder has reported a remarkable increase in user interaction, with a 25% rise in messages sent per match compared to traditional one-on-one chats. Meanwhile, College Mode expands on the previously established Tinder U feature, enabling college students to create profiles using their school email addresses and connect with potential matches on campus. This year, the update allows students to showcase more personal details, such as their major, graduation year, and involvement in clubs and Greek life. The latest iteration of College Mode facilitates matching with users beyond campus boundaries. Cleo Long, senior director of global product marketing at Tinder, emphasized the importance of adapting to the desires of younger users, stating, "Gen Z has been craving easier, low-pressure ways to connect, as their interests and preferred connection styles can vary daily. We’ve listened to our users, and they seek better matches instead of just an increase in quantity." Match Group, Tinder's parent company, highlighted these new dating modes during their Q2 2025 earnings call, confirming that the redesign and the Double Date feature will be available globally, while College Mode will be accessible to eligible users later this autumn.
