Tinder to fight ‘swipe fatigue’ with AI that analyses your photo gallery

Tinder is embarking on a transformative journey with the introduction of its innovative 'Chemistry' feature, designed to enhance user experience by leveraging artificial intelligence. This new functionality aims to analyze users' photo galleries to better understand their interests and personalities, ultimately providing more compatible match suggestions. The dating app is responding to a concerning trend, having experienced nine consecutive quarters of declining paying subscribers. In a bold move to reverse this downturn, Tinder is placing significant emphasis on AI technology. During a recent earnings call, Match Group CEO Spencer Rascoff disclosed that the feature is currently being piloted in New Zealand and Australia, and will serve as a cornerstone of Tinder’s product strategy moving into 2026. To gather insights, Tinder will prompt users with interactive questions after accessing their camera rolls. The AI will sift through users' photos to identify lifestyle indicators—such as images of outdoor adventures, pets, or travel experiences—to facilitate matches with individuals who share similar hobbies. Importantly, this feature is opt-in, ensuring that users must explicitly consent before the app can analyze their photo collections. In addition to this new offering, Tinder has been proactive in integrating other AI-driven enhancements aimed at fostering greater user interaction. Earlier this year, the app introduced a 'Photo Selector' feature that employs AI to assist users in selecting their most appealing profile pictures. Furthermore, Tinder has implemented a safety feature utilizing a large language model (LLM) that conducts real-time checks during conversations. If the AI detects a potentially offensive or inappropriate message, it prompts users with a cautionary query: "Are you sure you want to send that?" Adding to the interactive experience, Tinder has launched a game powered by OpenAI's GPT-4 model, enabling users to refine their flirting skills while receiving immediate feedback based on their interactions. To enhance security and reduce the prevalence of fake profiles, Tinder has also mandated that new users complete a video selfie verification process upon registration. These initiatives reflect Tinder's commitment to improving user satisfaction and safety on the platform.
