Tim Cook’s China visit reinforces country’s importance to Apple as global frictions rise

Tim Cook recently arrived in Chengdu, China, to celebrate Apple's 50th anniversary through an Apple Store event, marking a carefully orchestrated trip at a critical juncture for the tech giant's complex relationship with the world's largest smartphone market. The backdrop of rising tensions between the U.S. and China, exacerbated by geopolitical issues and recent investigations into Chinese trade practices, adds to the significance of this visit. Despite the mounting pressures, China remains a pivotal market for Apple. Just days before Cook's arrival, the company announced a reduction in its App Store commission for mainland China, dropping it from 30% to 25% on in-app purchases, effective March 15. Additionally, fees for smaller developers and mini-app partners saw a decrease from 15% to 12%. Apple attributed these adjustments to discussions with Chinese regulatory bodies. However, calls for further concessions from Apple have emerged. According to a report from TMTPost, the People's Daily, the official newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party, argued that Apple must do more, particularly regarding access to third-party payment systems and alternative app distribution for Chinese users. Simultaneously, China's State Administration for Market Regulation is conducting investigations into Apple's app fee policies and its restrictions on external payment services, as reported previously by CNBC. Despite these challenges, Apple's hardware business in China continues to flourish. Sales of iPhones surged by 23% in the first nine weeks of 2026, contrasting sharply with a 4% decline in the overall Chinese smartphone market during the same timeframe. Apple's recent financial performance in Greater China was impressive, with sales climbing 38% in the latest quarter, reaching $25.5 billion, largely due to the strong demand for the iPhone 17. This success can be attributed to a mix of online promotions and government trade-in incentives that supported the base model of the iPhone 17, as noted by Counterpoint Research. Moreover, Apple's ability to maintain stable pricing has been aided by rising costs faced by Android competitors like Oppo and Vivo, allowing the company to capture more market share. During his visit, Apple COO Sabih Khan toured key manufacturing partners, including Sunwoda's battery plant in Shenzhen and Foxconn assembly lines. As Apple approaches its anniversary, its dominance in the smartphone sector continues to reassure investors, particularly as Wall Street watches for advancements in the company's artificial intelligence initiatives. Although shares have dipped over 8% this year, analysts predict Apple could generate close to $1 billion in AI revenue, largely from subscription cuts related to generative AI applications available in the App Store. With the recent hiring of Amar Subramanya, a seasoned AI expert, Apple is poised to strengthen its position in the rapidly evolving AI landscape while leveraging its iPhone ecosystem for growth.
