Tim Cook squashes retirement rumors, says he 'can't imagine life without Apple'

During a recent appearance on "Good Morning America," Tim Cook, Apple's CEO, firmly addressed rumors regarding his potential retirement from the tech giant. In response to questions about his future, Cook stated, "No, I didn't say that. I haven't said that. I love what I do deeply. Twenty-eight years ago, I walked into Apple, and I've loved every day of it since." He emphasized that he cannot envision a life without Apple, signaling his dedication to the company. These reassurances from Cook come at a crucial time as Apple approaches its 50th anniversary on April 1. The company is poised to introduce significant innovations this year, including a foldable iPhone and AI glasses, while also working to enhance its Siri voice assistant, which faced setbacks in 2025. The backdrop of Cook's comments includes recent high-profile departures from Apple's executive team, which raised concerns about the company’s direction in the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence. Notably, Apple recently lost its AI chief, John Giannandrea, along with other key executives. Critics, such as LightShed Partners analyst Walter Piecyk, have warned that Apple risks falling behind in AI, potentially ceding ground to competitors like Google. In December, Piecyk cautioned that Apple's reliance on Google for AI features could mirror its previous surrendering of search capabilities, a situation that might ultimately benefit Android over the iPhone. He suggested that 2026 might be an optimal time for Cook to transition leadership, allowing him to step down while Apple is at a high point, with stock values nearing record highs and favorable market conditions. Despite these pressures, Cook remains confident in Apple's strategy, describing AI as a "profound" technology while defending the company's emphasis on user privacy. He also addressed ongoing trade issues, stating that Apple is closely monitoring developments regarding tariffs but did not commit to any legal actions at this time.
