JAKARTA, Indonesia — TikTok has had its local operating license reinstated in Indonesia following the submission of data regarding its live streaming activities during recent protests that turned deadly. The Indonesian government had previously suspended TikTok's license, citing a breach of obligations as a private electronic system operator. This action was taken after TikTok initially withheld full user activity data during the protests that occurred from August 25 to 30. In a correspondence dated September 23, TikTok indicated that its internal policies restricted its ability to fully comply with the government's data requests. The protests, which occurred in late August, were marked by widespread demonstrations against police brutality and the privileges of lawmakers, resulting in ten fatalities. As violence escalated, TikTok voluntarily halted its live streaming feature on August 30, resuming it shortly after when tensions eased, emphasizing its commitment to maintaining a safe online environment. The temporary suspension of TikTok's license raised alarms on social media regarding free speech protections under President Prabowo Subianto's administration, given the former general's controversial history during Indonesia's dictatorship period. Alexander Sabar, the Director General of Digital Space Supervision at the ministry, explained that the government required the data to identify accounts linked to online gambling that exploited TikTok's live streaming capabilities amid the protests. He emphasized that the suspension was part of an effort to enforce legal standards and foster a trustworthy digital ecosystem. Despite the license suspension, TikTok remained accessible in Indonesia. The company has reiterated its commitment to adhere to local laws and regulations, actively collaborating with the ministry to address the situation. On Saturday, Sabar announced that TikTok had provided essential data concerning the surge in traffic and monetization activities related to its live feature during the specified timeframe, which led to the restoration of its license as a registered electronic system provider.
