TikTok Shop launches digital gift cards to challenge Amazon and eBay

TikTok Shop has unveiled a new feature that enables users to purchase digital gift cards, enhancing the shopping experience for friends and family looking to buy from the app's extensive product range. This launch comes at a crucial time, coinciding with the holiday season—an important period for the platform’s shopping segment as it strives to establish its market presence. By entering the digital gifting arena, TikTok Shop positions itself to rival established e-commerce leaders like Amazon and eBay, both of which already provide gift card services. The platform has also made strides into luxury retail, further solidifying its position in the online shopping landscape. Users can load gift cards with amounts ranging from $10 to $500, and what distinguishes these cards is the option to customize them with a variety of animated designs tailored for occasions like birthdays, weddings, and thank-you gestures. Gift cards will be delivered via email, and recipients are required to have a TikTok account to redeem them. Once claimed, the card's value is instantly added to their TikTok Balance. Recipients have the chance to express gratitude with a thank-you note or even send a gift card back to the giver. Currently, the gift card feature is only available for purchase within the United States. TikTok has expressed intentions to enhance personalization options for these cards in the future. By 2026, users will have the ability to record or upload video messages to accompany their digital gifts. A spokesperson hinted at an upcoming feature that includes an “interactive unboxing” experience, capturing recipients' reactions in real-time, but more details remain under wraps. This launch follows a remarkable achievement for TikTok Shop, which reported sales exceeding $500 million in the U.S. during the Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping period. Nevertheless, the platform's future remains uncertain as discussions around the sale of its U.S. operations to an American investor group continue. Should the sale not proceed, TikTok could face a potential ban in the U.S., with the deadline for resolution extended to January 23, 2026, leaving the app's fate in a precarious position.
